- We hope the following information answers all of your questions about
- PaperOut, but please do not hestitate to ask for more information
- if you have any further questions.
-
-
- What is PaperOut?
-
- PaperOut is a retrieval program for Multimedia Electronic Book CDs
- which hold information in the EBG/EBXA format. This format was defined
- by Sony for the Sony Data Discman. PaperOut allows you to use all
- these CDs (expect discs containing Japanese) on a variety of computer
- platforms. There are already over 250 titles including many well known
- Encyclopedias and Reference Books available in the EBG/EBXA format.
-
- PaperOut enables you to use ONE AND THE SAME CD on different computer
- platforms.
-
- The program is currently available for:
-
- Sun OpenWindows 2.0/3.0
- NEXTSTEP for Intel PCs und Motorola
- Microsoft Windows 3.1
- Apple Macintosh
- Acorn Archimedes
-
- All versions utilize the standard graphical user interface of the
- corresponding computer platform.
-
- Using PaperOut is very easy. Menu-controlled search functions enable
- you to lookup data and articles by using the mouse and/or keyboard.
-
-
- What is an Electronic Book?
-
- This question can be easily answered. Take a conventional book,
- transfer the text of the book to a computer and write it onto a CD.
- Then you have an Electronic Book.
-
- A sceptic will now probably ask: "Why all this work? And what for? If
- I want to read a book, I'll take it out of my bookshelf, sit down
- comfortably and will enjoy holding the book in my hands and turning
- its pages!"
-
- Well, basically he is right. But if the sceptic wants to find all red
- wines produced in France between 1950 and 1960, which are rated "very
- good" in a wine guide, or if he wants to find all entries in a law
- text which contain the word "freedom", the enjoyment of reading a
- conventional book can very quickly become quite an inconvenience.
-
- This example shows that Electronic Books cannot and should not be a
- general replacement for conventional books. Electronic Books are a
- very new kind of media with very specific uses. Mainly encyclopedias,
- dictionaries, catalogs and other reference books are easier and better
- to use in the Electronic-Book-format.
-
- Electronic Books also have more "features" than conventional books.
- Not only text and graphics, but sound recordings can be contained in
- an Electronic Book. This is even more of an advantage as the sound
- recordings can be found by searching with the same search methods as
- for text and graphic entries. This makes it for example possible to
- include sound recordings of words in a dictionary; you can not only
- look up a word, but also listen to how it is pronounced when you have
- found it. An encyclopedia can contain e.g. music which you can listen
- to when you have looked up a composer or musician.
-
- But the most important advantage of Electronic Books is how you can
- find the information you are interested in. The following examples
- demonstrate the use of the so-called "search methods" of an Electronic
- Book with a dictionary.
-
-
- Menu Search
-
- In a conventional book you have a table of contents and possibly an
- index, which you can use to find text entries. An Electronic Book also
- has a table of contents, but it is called menu search, as it is used
- like other menus in the user interface of a program.
-
- The menu search is a much more versatile table of contents than a
- normal one. The "menu search" can be structured hierarchically
- allowing it to list all chapters, sub-chapters, sections etc. in all
- detail without confusing the user. Additionally the menu search can
- give access to graphic and sound entries. Thus far more information
- can be displayed and accessed with the menu search than with a
- conventional table of contents.
-
- An Electronic Book does not contain a traditional index as in a
- conventional book. This is replaced by the text-based search methods:
- word, endword and keyword search.
-
-
- Word Search
-
- Word search allows you to find entries in an Electronic Book by
- specifying the first letters of headwords of entries. This search
- method is similar to the "normal" search method used in "normal"
- dictionaries and encyclopedias. All entries with headwords beginning
- with the letters you entered as search text, will be found. E.g.
- entering "a" will find all entries with a headword which starts with
- an "a", "an", "ale", etc.), entering "bed" will find all entries with
- a headword which starts with "bed" ("bed", bedroom", etc.).
-
- This search method is especially useful if you are not sure of the
- spelling of the headword you want to find. Just enter as many letters
- as you know, then start the search. You can then browse through the
- entries found for the word you were looking for.
-
-
- Endword Search
-
- Endword search allows you to find entries in an Electronic Book by
- specifying the last letters of headwords of entries. All entries with
- headwords which end with the letters you enter as search text, will be
- found. E.g. entering "e" will find all entries with a headword which
- ends with an "e" ("ale", "file", "were", etc.), entering "ment" will
- find all entries ending with "ment" ("abridgement", "accomplishment",
- "treatment", etc.).
-
-
- Keyword search
-
- Keyword search is the most powerful search method offered by
- Electronic Books. It enables you to find entries in an Electronic Book
- by specifying one or more words which should be in the actual entry
- text. All entries which contain the words specified as search text in
- their text will be found. E.g. entering "food" and "vegetarian" will
- find all entries which contain the word "food" and the word
- "vegetarian" in their text.
-
- You do not have to enter a complete word as search text. The search
- will start by matching the text you entered with the first letters of
- words in the text of entries (like the matching done by word search
- with headwords). As soon as a matching word is found, the search will
- be continued by looking just for that word in further entries. E.g. if
- you enter "foo" as search text and the word "food" is the first
- matching word in the text of entries, the search will be continued by
- looking only for "food". If "fool" had been the first word found, the
- search would have been continued by looking for that.
-
-
- Multi Search
-
- When using multi search you answer up to four questions about the kind
- of entries you want to find. It is somewhat like filling out a form.
- Answers to the question can be typed text or can be chosen from a menu
- of predefined replies. E.g. a postcode could be looked up by specifing
- the city, street and house number.
-
-
- Consultation Search
-
- The consultation search is different from the other search methods as
- it is not a query where you supply text which is used to look up
- something.
-
- It is simply a reference to another entry in the Electronic Book. This
- can be a text entry or a graphic entry, or even a sound entry, which
- will be played when you follow the reference. In a dictionary the
- entry "motor" could contain references to the entries "electromotor"
- and "combustion motor".
-
- Such references are marked specially when a text or graphic entry
- containing them is displayed. By selecting a reference you will move
- directly to the corresponding entry in the Electronic Book.
-
-
- Graphic Search
-
- The graphic search is actually a special case of the consultation
- search. Here is a small example:
-
- Let us assume you are looking for the main tourist attractions in a
- part of city. Here a graphic search with a map of the part of the city
- you are interested in could help you. The map would contain references
- to entries about buildings, places etc. at their positions in the map.
- You would just have to choose a sight on the map and the information
- on the sight in the Electronic Book would be displayed.
-
-
- General Remarks
-
- Which search methods are used in an Electronic Book varies from book
- to book. Some Electronic Books may only use word search, others more
- or all of the search methods.
-
- An Electronic Book may contain up to eight volumes; e.g. a dictionary
- could be divided into two volumes: one English-German volume and one
- German-English volume. Each volume may use different search methods.
-
- PaperOut is a software which allows you to use Electronic Books with
- your computer system. It supplies the interface and features to give
- you access to the information you wish to find and use in Electronic
- Books. All the search methods which can be used in an Electronic Book
- are supported by PaperOut through the user interface your system
- offers. An on-line manual which explains how to use PaperOut is
- included in the software.
